Meet-The-Expert Tobias Esch

On July 1, Prof. Esch visited the Research Training Group to present on his OpenNotes project. He is Chair and Director of the Institute for Integrative Health Care and Health Promotion at Witten/Herdecke University. As a physician, neuroscientist, and health researcher, he has long focused on empowering patients. He has collaborated with the OpenNotes initiative for nearly a decade.

During his visit, Prof. Esch spoke about his work on OpenNotes, which is a global movement to make healthcare more transparent and collaborative by giving patients access to their medical notes. He shared insights from his time as a Harkness Fellow and visiting professor at Harvard Medical School, his involvement in international policy discussions, and the implementation of OpenNotes at Germany’s first university clinic for primary care.
